Life coaches obtain certification through courses taught by experienced life coaches and educators. Life coaches will often, but not always, also have experienced backgrounds in related subjects such as psychotherapy and social work like Coach Richard Warren does. It is important to know the credentials of any potential life coach before engaging in work with them. 

A life coach will help their client find their own answers and improve their life, resulting in a changed person. A consultant is typically someone that is sought out to give answers or to act as a mentor, it is a different type of relationship than a life coach.
